6 Main Types of Auto Coverage

Posted by Jacques Alpacino Barker | Jun 30, 2021

1. LIABILITY COVERAGE
Liability coverage is mandatory in the majority of states. Auto owners are required to purchase the minimum amount of coverage, which is $25,000 in Georgia. This coverage comes with two components—bodily injury (pays for the other party's injuries when you are negligent) and property damage (pays for damage that you cause to the other party's vehicle).

2. COLLISION COVERAGE
This coverage is optional but may be required by your lender when purchasing a vehicle. It helps to pay to replace (actual cash value) or repair your vehicle when you strike an object, etc. while driving.

3. COMPREHENSIVE COVERAGE
This coverage is optional but may be required by your lender as well. It covers things such as theft, hail, flooding, fire, etc. It may help to repair or replace your vehicle up to the actual cash value.

4. MEDICAL PAYMENTS COVERAGE
This coverage is required in some states but not mandatory in Georgia. It covers medical costs for your injuries (hospital visits, surgery, X-rays, etc.) when you, your family or passengers are in an accident.

5. PERSONAL INJURY PROTECTION
This coverage is required in some states and not available at all in others. It is optional in Georgia. It also covers medical expenses after an accident. Additionally, it may cover certain expenses or losses incurred such as loss of income and child care expenses.

6. UNINSURED AND UNDERINSURED MOTORIST COVERAGE
This type of coverage is HIGHLY recommended by Barker Law Group, LLC. It could possibly make a huge difference in your case (if it is added to your policy). UM/UIM coverage is required in some states but is optional in most. It covers you when you are struck by a driver that does not have insurance at all or their covered policy is not enough to cover your overall loss. It covers medical bills and could possibly pay for property damage (depending on the state).
